The author Captain Frank Green was Company Officer and later Adjutant of the Battalion.
The 40th Battalion was formed in March 1916 in the State of Tasmania, Australia. After a period in England, the 40th Battalion arrived in France late November 1916 and served on the Western Front until the Armistice.
The 40th Battalion was part of the 10th Brigade, which consisted of the 37th, 38th and 39th Battalions from Victoria, and the 40th Battalion from Tasmania. The 10th Brigade, together with the 9th and 11th Brigades, were part of the 3rd Division
